1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Why it is worth knowing
- Four titles in one verse: chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, God’s possession
- These titles were given to Israel in Exodus 19: now applied to the church
- The purpose of the identity is proclamation: being chosen leads to witness
- “Marvelous light” contrasts with the darkness we were called out of
Where it sits: 1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Background
Peter wrote to scattered Jewish and Gentile Christians facing social marginalization and persecution. He reminds them of who they are: not refugees or second-class citizens but a royal priesthood. The language is drawn directly from Exodus 19:5-6, where God described his purpose for Israel at Sinai. Peter applies it to the church: the new covenant community. The contrast “in the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people” (1 Peter 2:10) echoes Hosea’s prophecy and speaks directly to those who felt they had no place, no home, no identity.
