Why it is worth knowing
- Jesus does not merely promise resurrection: he claims to be resurrection itself
- Physical death is not the final word for the believer
- The question “Do you believe this?” is addressed to every reader
- Faith in Christ transforms the meaning of death entirely
Where it sits: John 11:23-27
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

Background
Jesus says these words at the tomb of Lazarus, just before raising him from the dead. Martha’s faith was orthodox but future-tense: “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus pulls the future into the present: resurrection is not an event to be waited for but a person to be known. By raising Lazarus, Jesus gave a foretaste of his own resurrection and of the general resurrection to come. The personal question (“Do you believe this?”) hangs in the air of every conversation about death and eternity.
