Why it is worth knowing

  1. The command is “seek first”: priority, not exclusivity
  2. “God’s Kingdom” is where God’s rule is fully active
  3. The promise is that God will supply needs to those who prioritize him
  4. Worry is addressed not by self-sufficiency but by reordering priorities

Where it sits: Matthew 6:31-34

“Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

Background

This verse comes at the end of Jesus’s teaching on anxiety in the Sermon on the Mount. He has just pointed to birds and flowers as evidence that God provides for his creation. The climactic instruction is not “stop worrying” but rather “seek first”: worry is addressed by reorienting desire and attention toward God’s kingdom. The word “seek” is present tense and continuous: this is an ongoing posture of life. The promise that “all these things will be given to you as well” is not a prosperity gospel but a statement of God’s faithful provision to those who prioritize his rule.
