Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. Trust requires the whole heart, not divided loyalty
  2. Our natural understanding is limited; God’s perspective is complete
  3. “Acknowledge him” means bringing God into every decision
  4. Straight paths are not always easy paths: they are the right ones

Where it sits: Proverbs 3:1-8

My son, don’t forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for they will add to you length of days, years of life, and peace. Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor, and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil. It will be health to your body, and nourishment to your bones.

Background

The book of Proverbs is addressed as a father speaking to his son, offering wisdom for life. These verses sit at the heart of the book’s message: wisdom is not mere intelligence: it is a posture of humble reliance on God. The contrast between trusting your own understanding and trusting God is one of the Bible’s most recurring themes.
