Romans 8:38-39

Inseparable from God's Love

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. Paul lists every conceivable category of threat: none of them can sever God’s love
  2. “I am persuaded”: this is confident conviction, not wishful thinking
  3. “God’s love which is in Christ Jesus”: the love is located in a person
  4. The list ends with “nor any other created thing”: there are no exceptions

Where it sits: Romans 8:35-39

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Background

This verse concludes one of the greatest chapters in Scripture with a doxology of certainty. Paul has walked through the Spirit’s work, suffering, intercession, and God’s sovereignty. Now he answers the ultimate question: can anything undo God’s love? He surveys the cosmos (death and life (time’s extremes), angels and rulers (spiritual powers), present and future (temporal dimensions), height and depth (spatial dimensions), anything in all creation) and the verdict is a resounding no. Paul’s confidence is not in his own faithfulness but in the unbreakable love of God revealed in Christ.
