Proverbs 18:10

God as Refuge

Proverbs 18:10

Yahweh’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.

Why it is worth knowing

  1. “Name” represents the full character and nature of God: who he is
  2. A strong tower is where you run in battle, not comfort but protection
  3. “The righteous run to him”: this is active, urgent refuge-seeking, not passive waiting
  4. Safety is promised to those who actively take refuge in God

Where it sits: Proverbs 18:10-11

Yahweh’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe. The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.

Background

Proverbs 18:10-11 sets up a contrast between two “towers”: God’s name and the rich man’s wealth. One is genuinely protective; the other is a fortress only “in his imagination.” In the ancient world, a strong tower was the last line of defense in a city: the place where civilians would flee when attackers breached the walls. To run to God’s name is to flee to the only truly unassailable refuge. The contrast with wealth is intentional: what we trust for security reveals where our heart is.
